MOVEMENT MONDAY #1: The Toe Point |
Written by Cheryl Myers
We are so excited today to launch our very first regular weekly column here at CGE! The fabulous Cheryl Myers - a longtime member of our team - is going to bring us one tidbit of useful and entertaining information about movement each Monday. And she'd love for you to write in with your best questions so she can try to address those! Today, her first installment is about the toe point! Here she goes!
A Column! Hey, lookey there, I have a column. “Kids… Kids! Mommy has a column… No, over here.. Honey; no, here… it’s about movement. Well, yes, Dancing. Yes, like Mommy does in the gym… What? Oh. Well. Sure, you can have a snack.” Sigh… Well then. The chickadees aren’t quite as thrilled as I about this new development at CGE, but hey, baby steps. Welcome to Movement Mondays! Guided by yours truly ~ The Movement Chick. Oh, you like the new title? **blush** Thank you… I made it up myself. Ok, I’m done rambling. The idea here is to provide a brief snippet of information relative to your movement program each week. Do you have a question? A concern? A skill which is just not working out for your team? A Macy’s gift card you have NO idea what to do with? Please, let us know and we’ll contribute as best we can. Who is “we” you ask? Why, yours truly and my fantastic research team. A-hem. Just as soon as we recruit that team. In the interim, it’s yours truly and the dictionary; my wealth of knowledge; the four shelves of anatomy and dance books I actually do own and, of course, Google.

HALFTIME ARTICLE: "Bands Give Back" |
Written by Catina Anderson
Here at the holidays many of us take time to think of ways we can "give back." I know that in my house I'm working hard to teach my 5-year-old twin daughters that the holidays should be more about giving than getting! Those of you who have been long-time readers probably know that I strongly encourage coaches to find ways to provide service opportunities for their students - especially opportunities that allow the student to use their special talents and our art form to benefit the local community. This is the passion that led to my own team's 2006 winterguard show inspired by the Race for the Cure and a season of service with my students as well as the formation of our Colorguard Spin for the Cure team which benefits the Komen Global Race for the Cure. I was thrilled when Halftime Magazine publisher Christine Ngeo Katzman contacted me to say they were doing an article on marching organizations that participate in philanthropy. I am even more excited now that the article has been published in the November/December issue because it highlights not only our race team but a variety of projects done by marching organizations throughout the country who are making a difference. The featured projects include a halftime benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims, fundraising to battle ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease), free music instruction for younger students and yes, our race team! I hope you might take a moment to read the article and that it might inspire you to consider adding this rewarding type of educational experience to your game plan! It's easier than you think and the rewards are well worth the effort! Click Here to read "Bands Give Back" by Elizabeth Geli, Halftime Magazine November/December 2009. |

FROM THE ARCHIVES: Mapping Out Your Show |
Written by Catina Anderson
From time to time we like to feature older articles that may still be relevant for our newer readers who may not have seen them the first time around! Today it's our instructional resource, "Mapping Out Your Show." One of the very first articles posted here at CGE back in January 2007, it discusses my method for organizing winter guard show design using a simple "music map" which I then used to plan rehearsals, communicate with staff and make sure that all the elements of the show design are properly placed and paced. It certainly helped me to organize the season as well as keep what can be an overwhelming task in perspective and broken into manageable chunks. We think it's still as relevant today as it was when posted back in January of 2007. We hope you find it helpful! |

I just love finding out that our world connects somehow with the greater arts community and today's article shed new light for me on a contestant from one of my favorite shows. WGI has posted a feature article today on their website "Up Close with Ariana DeBose." Ariana was one of the top 20 contestants on Season 6 of Fox's Hit Dance Show "So You Think You Can Dance" and also both a performer and choreographer for her high school color guard. Check it out! |

Helping with the Holiday Shopping |

'Tis the season when parents everywhere are searching and scrambling for the latest and greatest to surprise their children under the tree. YOU can help ease some of that stress! Every year I was coaching full-time I would get a few emails from parents asking where we bought our rifles or what size flags we used because they wanted to buy one for their child as a Christmas present. A few years ago I decided to put together a general email with all this information early in the holiday season and send it to my parents-only email list!
The result? A lot of happy parents who were grateful I went the extra mile to try to help even when not asked. Even those who weren't going to buy guard-related gifts appreciated the gesture. |

CNN.com features video about Blind Student in Colorado Marching Band |

Wow - sorry for the multiple posts today but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to let people know about this wonderful story - especially in this week of Thanksgiving. Check out this CNN.com video about a blind mellophone performer in a Colorado high school marching band who, with the help of his section leader, is finding his place marching on the field in the band's field show. Thanks to one of my facebook friends and another colorguard blogger Amanda Gilyani for bringing this video to my attention. What a difference this director is making in the lives of all of his students. Wonderful story, wonderful lessons! |

A Color Guard Thanksgiving! |
Written by Catina Anderson
This month I've been trying to focus at least one time each day on something I am thankful for as we head into this year's Thanksgiving holiday. It's forced me to take at least five minutes each day to step away from the daily stress and think positive - remembering just how lucky I am to have this life.
In this spirit, our team here at CGE thought it might be nice to share some of our "colorguard thankfuls" today and we'd LOVE to hear yours! Please join us in sharing the thankfulness spirit and leave a comment today letting everyone in our CGE community know what about this wonderful activity makes you most thankful this year.
Here are our "Thankfuls" to get the sharing started! |

"Live To Spin" Documentary has been Released |
Written by Catina Anderson

Last spring we were lucky enough to meet Anna Jakubowski through our CGE community. Anna was working on a documentary which chronicled a full season with the Pacificaires , a winter guard from British Columbia, Canada. In a wonderful twist of fate, the Pacificaires ended this special season as WGI finalists as well!
She took some time away from her documentary to produce a Q&A video with the directors of the Pacificaires which we posted here on CGE last March (check it out if you missed it the first time! Q&A: An Interview with Alan and Florence Dyck of the Pacificaires ). This week she contacted us again to let us know that "Live to Spin" is now completed and ready for purchase just in time for both the holidays and the winter seasons. We haven't had a chance to see it ourselves... so we can't post any review or recommendations yet. But we did want to let you know it's out there in case you want to check it out for yourself. You can always come back to this article in the future and leave your own reviews as comments. She also indicated that she's offering the DVD as a fundraising opportunity for guards as well - so if that's something that might interest your unit - check out her website at Live to Spin ! |

Blackwatch Clinic at Mechanicsburg! |
Written by Catina Anderson
Blackwatch , the highly acclaimed independent world class ensemble from Mt. Laurel New Jersey is hosting a spin/movement clinic at Mechanicburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania "for all levels of performers from any association," Saturday December 12, 2009. The cost is only $20.00 per student (collected at the door). Here's a link to the original flyer! They did tell us that they can extend the RSVP deadline to December 1st.
Not only is the clinic open to performers but the flyer says that instructors will have an opportunity to meet with world class designers to discuss their show concepts and ideas! How great!
So if you'd like your students to attend what promises to be a worthwhile clinic have them RSVP by December 1, 2009 to Kristy Templin (her email is listed on the flyer. .. we'll avoid posting it here in order to protect it from those awful spambots that go around and collect emails from blog sites!). Thanks to KIDA , Blackwatch and Mechanicsburg for putting together this excellent educational event AND for opening it up to everyone! |

For those of you who are new to the site, chances are you haven't found time to discover all the tidbits buried within the three years of sharing that exists here. If you check out the menu at the top of the page there are several "drop down" menus that reveal even more layers of information! One of these references is our Glossary of Color Guard Terms . Linked under the "Resources" tab, this page was started right at the very beginning of CGE. Problem was... there were many terms listed WITHOUT definitions. That's why I'm VERY excited today that our new writer Chelley Thelen finished up the list for us! Now, when I say "finished" I really am just saying that she finished what is already there. I know we can come up with great photos to compliment some of the terms AND that there are plenty of terms we have likely left out. SO - that's where you, our readers, come in! If you have a term to add or think a definition could use revision, PLEASE feel free to

! That's what this site is all about! CG educators working together as a community to creating an amazing resource to share with each other. So, don't be shy! SHARE! I know that this list has been used not only as a reference for coaches - but as a reference for students writing papers or preparing speeches for their high school classes. And I'm thankful to Chelley today for helping this reference take a BIG step forward! |
