Just a quick idea for today for all those heading to a hotel for competition, especially if you're managing your first overnight trip. And it is...
Don't forget to plan for breakfast! Many hotels include a continental breakfast in their room price. Make sure to ask if breakfast is included or available and ask what time serving starts.
Requesting Separate SpaceFor those with large groups you might be able to request a separate area for breakfast. Some hotels will set up a banquet or meeting room allowing you space to eat as a team with few distractions. These banquet/meeting rooms can also be a lovely space for morning stretches as a team as well.
For Groups with Early Arrival TimesWhat if the breakfast is available but you have to leave the hotel at 5 a.m. to make an 8 a.m. arrival time at the contest site?? Don't fret. It still may be possible to take advantage of the free continental breakfast. Explain the situation to hotel management and ask if they would be willing to bag or box some breakfast items for your group. Even offer to bring the bags yourself. One year my hotel made box breakfasts with a muffin, water bottle, banana etc. that my students were able to grab on the way out and eat on the bus.
What if your hotel isn't offering breakfast... well this is where the parent crew will be a lifesaver! Ask a parent to plan a bagged breakfast for the kids with healthy items (again, bananas, muffins, water, granola bars, apples, etc....). They'll be more than happy to help!
Mid-Morning SnackEven if you have breakfast taken care of - you still may want to ask your parents to plan a mid-morning snack as well. A granola bar and extra bottle of water, an apple... You'll be surprised how hungry your performers might be! Your parent crew will feel great knowing they were able to contribute and knowing their kids are well taken care of! And you won't have to worry about cranky performers running on empty as you try to get them to focus for warm-ups. Who knows! Maybe your breakfast will become the breakfast of champions! |

[Intro by Catina Anderson] CGE readers may remember that we've done a small series of question and answer style articles featuring color guard educators in the past. If you check out these articles, they are rich with inside information, insight and tips. But they were also REALLY long! Realizing that most of us don't have huge chunks of time to read long articles we have been deliberating on a better format for these articles which we still think are really interesting. CGE contributor Chris Casteel came up with a shortened interview format that we're going to give a try. Chris is the education coordinator for the Winter Guard Association of Southern California so she has started a series of local interviews in WGASC which the subjects and WGASC were gracious enough to allow us to also repost here for all of you! We hope to feature long-time educators from a variety of regions here on CGE in addition to Chris's WGASC educators. The interviews will give you a brief introduction to the educator and ask them to share some of their insight into what has given them success and/or longevity. Where do they find inspiration? How did they grow their programs? How do they balance the demands of the competition season with daily life? And What is something they learned along the way they wish they'd known from the start? The first interview comes from California's WGASC winter guard circuit- James (Jim) Goodrich who currently works with El Toro, Fountain Valley and Mayfair High Schools. Thank you Chris, Jim and WGASC for sharing your experience and insight with color guard educators everywhere! |

“The Face is the Window of the Soul…” I don’t know who originally said this, and try as I might, I can’t seem to find a name to match to the quote. But I do know one thing; when I look at this small segment of the Mona Lisa’s face, I can’t help but be transfixed by her expression. It is not overt or over the top; however, it speaks volumes just the same. I believe that this is a good place to start an article that is all about facial expression in performance. |

I have a confession to make... Up until I got my iphone I owned a cell phone, but I NEVER used it. I didn't know how to program things in. I missed every call. I was the one saying, "yeah... that's my number but call me at home because I never hear it and I forget to check my voicemail." It drove my guard staff crazy. And seriously... if they needed to get in touch with me they called the team captains (because you know every teenager is glued to their cell phone!). But then came the iphone. For this internet addict I now had a computer I could carry around with me to check my email and facebook. Now my phone was there too. And believe it or not... I no longer even have a landline telephone. And now I realize what a GREAT organizational tool this would have been all those years I was coaching and taking kids on field trips! What a great way to organize all that information you need on a field trip and to make sure you've got emergency numbers on hand and can get to them quickly! Here are some tips to prepare your Cell Phone for Competition Day! |
