Just a quick idea for today for all those heading to a hotel for competition, especially if you're managing your first overnight trip. And it is...
Don't forget to plan for breakfast! Many hotels include a continental breakfast in their room price. Make sure to ask if breakfast is included or available and ask what time serving starts.
Requesting Separate SpaceFor those with large groups you might be able to request a separate area for breakfast. Some hotels will set up a banquet or meeting room allowing you space to eat as a team with few distractions. These banquet/meeting rooms can also be a lovely space for morning stretches as a team as well.
For Groups with Early Arrival TimesWhat if the breakfast is available but you have to leave the hotel at 5 a.m. to make an 8 a.m. arrival time at the contest site?? Don't fret. It still may be possible to take advantage of the free continental breakfast. Explain the situation to hotel management and ask if they would be willing to bag or box some breakfast items for your group. Even offer to bring the bags yourself. One year my hotel made box breakfasts with a muffin, water bottle, banana etc. that my students were able to grab on the way out and eat on the bus.
What if your hotel isn't offering breakfast... well this is where the parent crew will be a lifesaver! Ask a parent to plan a bagged breakfast for the kids with healthy items (again, bananas, muffins, water, granola bars, apples, etc....). They'll be more than happy to help!
Mid-Morning SnackEven if you have breakfast taken care of - you still may want to ask your parents to plan a mid-morning snack as well. A granola bar and extra bottle of water, an apple... You'll be surprised how hungry your performers might be! Your parent crew will feel great knowing they were able to contribute and knowing their kids are well taken care of! And you won't have to worry about cranky performers running on empty as you try to get them to focus for warm-ups. Who knows! Maybe your breakfast will become the breakfast of champions! |

I have a confession to make... Up until I got my iphone I owned a cell phone, but I NEVER used it. I didn't know how to program things in. I missed every call. I was the one saying, "yeah... that's my number but call me at home because I never hear it and I forget to check my voicemail." It drove my guard staff crazy. And seriously... if they needed to get in touch with me they called the team captains (because you know every teenager is glued to their cell phone!). But then came the iphone. For this internet addict I now had a computer I could carry around with me to check my email and facebook. Now my phone was there too. And believe it or not... I no longer even have a landline telephone. And now I realize what a GREAT organizational tool this would have been all those years I was coaching and taking kids on field trips! What a great way to organize all that information you need on a field trip and to make sure you've got emergency numbers on hand and can get to them quickly! Here are some tips to prepare your Cell Phone for Competition Day! |

Between the Door and the Music |

Do you rehearse the process of what occurs once your guard steps through the doorway of a gymnasium and into the competitive arena? I’m talking about getting everything through the door and setting it. Sometimes it appears that we spend hours upon hours rehearsing what happens once the music starts, but pay little attention to that brief amount of time between the door and the performance. Realize that there are psychological, logistical and safety matters that play into the importance of planned gym entrances and exits. |

Imagine your performers in this situation… They step onto the gym floor amidst a flurry of pre show excitement, expectations of their team mates and instructors, and last minute show changes. In the audience are friends, family, instructors, competitors and judges. They can hear the blood pumping in their ears, hearts are racing, and their throats are dry. Their mind is spinning with an overflow of information; don’t forget to do this, remember to do that. If only there was an escape from this moment! Panic fills their body. How can they possibly go on?! Every muscle is tense as they wait for the sound of the announcer’s voice to begin their performance. |

Well, this is it. We have arrived at the last few fleeting moments of rehearsal before Championships (heavy sign). Hopefully all the final details of your shows have been put into place. The performance flags have finally arrived from the seamstress, and your team has reached their absolute peak in performance (sarcasm noted). Of course, you most likely yearn to hear your show music one more time...don't fret, that nagging twitch will soon fade into oblivion! Likewise, I am quite sure that some of you may still dream of your shows, while desperately trying to experience a good night sleep. There really should be instructor therapy offered after each season! |
