Quick Tip!

"Are your new girls having trouble seeing the complete guard form amongst all the other positions on their drill chart?  Advise them to mark the guard's form with one color highlighter and their own position in another color.  It may take more time, but in the end they will be able to see the complete picture more quickly.  Not only that, it will give them some quality time with their drill charts which aids in memorization."

The "10 Game" Print E-mail
Written by Nicole Younger

"I have been teaching/teching/instructing my current guard for the past 2 marching band seasons and they are about to start their 2nd winter guard season. After we have totally cleaned a section or phrase and everyone is correct with body, hand placement and equipment, we play the "10 Game". During this game, the guard does the phrase 10 times correctly (with no instruction in between) and then we move on. If someone messes up or breaks, we start over. This helps to teach muscle memory and also helps members to retain work correctly. Repetition is key!"

Before your big debut, take some time to practice in uniform. Sometimes, the students are not used to a skirt or performing in a one sleeved uniform. The students can see what undergarments they will personally need and you, as an instructor, can see what the uniforms will look like on the field or floor.

The metal pieces of a rifle can be particularly sharp on bare hands, especially in cold weather.  Avoid injury by taping over all exposed metal including swivels and strap screws with electrical tape before the season begins.
