A MOVEMENT MOMENT #10: Too Clean? Print E-mail

Hey y’all [I’m heading to Texas, it is COMPLETELY appropriate that I get into the spirit]

For the majority of the country, this is the big push before Championships weekend - Power Regionals abound, local contests are hotly contested

[ha! Get it? Contests are contested? **crickets** Sigh. Never mind]

AND, to add some sugar on top, Saturday is the first day of spring!  [Yes, we will all be spending said first day enjoying winterguard inside gymnasiums with no natural light and nary a robin in sight but never mind that]

Some of you may be wondering… “Hey, Movement Chick, what can we POSSIBLY to do improve upon the sparkling luster that is our program right now?”

Well, now, I am SO glad you asked! Last week in Regional Land, I ran into a situation a few dozen times, which I will pontificate upon share with you.

Go the Extra Mile

If I had a nickel for every time I use the words:  Extend and Elongate on a tape digital recorder, well… I don’t know as I’d be wealthy, but darn, I’d have a good sized nickel collection.

I’m about to say something scandalous.  Go ahead and sit down, I’ll wait.  Take a deep breath.  Ready?  Are you sure?  Okay… I’ll go slow.

LENT – what are you giving up this year?

Hello Everyone! Welcome to March.  Apparently there’s some basketball something or other [shout out to Syracuse, woo!] coming up this month, but really?  Let’s be honest… it’s a scant 3 ½ weeks to Champs for most of us, and I am started to see WGI prelims countdowns on Facebook.  [Seriously, am I the only one who is woefully addicted to FB?  Craziness, I tell you. What did we do prior to Farmville? Strike that, I am NOT a fan of Farmville]

A-hem

Back to my point.  Yes, I had a point, hush.  It’s about Lent.

For the record, I am not Catholic, [Evangelical, but I won’t go there, and you’re welcome] I do not give up anything for Lent, but have a healthy respect for those who do.  This topic stemmed from an exhausting day of watching twirls and the resultant overtired adjudicators slugging wine and devouring fried food enjoying an adult beverage and a light snack post contest.

It was at this point that the inevitable discussion comes up.  Yes, we discuss this after EVERY contest… well; at least I do, because I insist on it if I have a pet peeve, it is this.

Why oh why oh why… do many some teams think the line of the leg ends at the ANKLE???

A MOVEMENT MOMENT #8: Put on Your Audience Eyes Print E-mail

Zip.  Zero.  Nada.  Negative.  Nuthin.

That’s how much colorguard exposure the Movement Chick has had in the past three weekends.  You see, Mother Nature has apparently gotten ahold of my planner and wreaked havoc on my show schedule, and I have consequently been iced/snowed/airlined out of South Carolina, Ohio and Northern Virginia. Of course I am feeling sympathy for the teams not getting a chance to show off their stuff, but really… let’s talk about the tragedy of trying to reincorporate one’s self into the “real world” on several weekends in January.  Goodness, there’s sporting events and pancakes and house projects… even some holiday called Valentine’s Day?  Who knew? I have gained several a few pounds, painted my closet, been on 2 dates with my honey…good times. My children, however, are sorely tired of not getting their weekly Guilty Conscience Bribe payoff gift from whatever airport I’ve been dawdling in, and are really, quite ready for Mommy to leave town again thankyouverymuch

Kansas City, here I come.  Fingers crossed and toes pointed.

However, dear readers, because I am here to serve the movement needs of my adoring public audience I will reach into the depths of my mind and produce a sparkling moment of movement information.

Or maybe we could just swap recipes?

**Crickets**

Alrighty then.

Sometimes, I am shocked dismayed taken aback by some choreographic, errr, choices which, are, quite frankly,  ummm… let’s just say, not thought out too well.  There are some body angles which can distort a movement skill; show your performers in an unflattering light, and are really, sometimes, just WRONG.

Let's Face It... Print E-mail

“The Face is the Window of the Soul…”  I don’t know who originally said this, and try as I might, I can’t seem to find a name to match to the quote. But I do know one thing; when I look at this small segment of the Mona Lisa’s face, I can’t help but be transfixed by her expression.  It is not overt or over the top; however, it speaks volumes just the same.  I believe that this is a good place to start an article that is all about facial expression in performance.

A Movement Moment #7: Spotting Print E-mail

Hey everyone!  So, ummm, here’s the thing ~ the Monday movement posting deal was NOT so much working for the movement chick over here.  Something about dragging my sorry self [albeit with great shoes] off a plane, driving through the tundra and hugging on my chickadees, all in a home without internet service has precluded my ability to compose anything witty on a Sunday evening.  [No comments need be made on my wittiness on any other day, thankyouverymuch]

So.

Movement Moments will now be brought to you “mid-week.”   Okay, I’m looking towards Wednesdays, but really, how fun is Mid-week Movement Moments?  [Again, with the alliteration. I am a thwarted English teacher, I’m afraid]

Here’s some shocking news, again, I digress.

I was one of the unfortunate folks cancelled out of my contest last weekend.  [Pardon me, while there is a moment of WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!  Hey, really, I LOVE what I do, but the last Saturday I had off during the winter was in 2003, no lie]

Ahem.  K, I’m back.

And, having used up all of my column inches on my rambling, I’ll be short and sweet this week.

Let’s talk about spotting.  Yes, I know, it’s a dreaded thing.  Trust me, when I chaîné across a gym floor, I am a mess whirling dervish little bit wobbly.   It’s a basic skill, but it’s one which is overlooked oh… well, let’s just say A LOT.
