FUN for FRIDAY! #5: Locker Magnets Print E-mail
Written by Catina Anderson

Hello all!  Well... it looks like we owe you a couple weeks of FUN here. It's been a little break in our Fun for Friday action but we're back.  This week's idea was sent in, once again, by reader Brenda Scarpati of the State of Illusion Winter Guard from Bloomfield Hills, MI.  It's a simple and quick idea that is sure to be a fun mid-season surprise for your performers.

locker magnets

Brenda purchases blank peel & stick magnet business cards (she says they usually come in sheets of 10). Then she downloads guard clipart from sites which allow downloading and use for non-commercial purposes (like ours!), adds some fun wording, prints, separates the cards, applies the magnets and...

Voila!

A quick and easy surprise for her performers!

You can use clipart as she did or you can print a note of praise or encouragement along with a photo from the season.  The options are endless.  But every time your performers opens their locker they'll remember you cared!  How cool!

Have a great weekend and HAPPY SPINNING!

Important Note: The clipart Brenda used for her magnets in the photos above was found at Colorguard Floors and Colorguard Central, both sites offer the use of their clipart for free, non-commercial use.  You can also find clipart on our site in our cliparts section, also available for free, non-commercial use.

FUN for FRIDAY! #4: You ROCK! Print E-mail

You ROCK

When I was a freshman in high school I was on the pom squad (yes... I admit it...).

We only had 2 competitions but after the first our coach gave us a tiny bear that she tied a ribbon around with a nice note.  It wasn't anything fancy but I saved that bear for YEARS... who knows... it may still be in a box in my basement somewhere!

Knowing how much I treasured that small gift, when I began coaching I made a point of giving my students gifts as well.  Without "breaking the bank" I tried to give them a little something at key points in the season - their first show, championships, the banquet.

And... growing up I had a "crafty" mother... she was (and still is) constantly making things, crocheting, sewing.  She taught me when I was small that a well-thought-out handmade gift can make a big impression.  Certainly with my students I found they were always so shocked when I gave them something handmade because they knew I had spent my own time, outside of rehearsal, thinking about them and making something for them.

Hey... it's not for everyone... but I think it's fun!

So this week's FUN idea is a project I did for my guard way back in 2002 to let them know that I thought they ROCKED!

mardi gras beads

It's Fun for Friday again and this week's fun idea was sent to us by Brenda Scarpati of the State of Illusion Winter Guard from Bloomfield Hills, MI.  (also on facebook ).  She gives her performers a strand of Mardi-gras style beads after each performance, tagged with the name and date of the competition.  She says they bring all their beads "to each contest and keep adding to their collection."

FUN for FRIDAY! #2: Parents-Only Dinner! Print E-mail

This week's fun idea was sent to us by reader Heidi Zarder, coach of the Hamilton High School Synergy Color Guard from Sussex, Wisconsin!  Thank you Heidi for taking the time to share your fun idea with the CGE Community!

Heidi plans a night of fun JUST for the guard parents!  I think this is a FANTASTIC idea!  Here's what she wrote:
"To get the parents to know one another in order to recognize each another at football games & competitions we host a parents-only dinner. It's gotten too big for my house therefore one of the parents "hosts". I bring several lasagna's, alfredo shells, tiramisu & cheesecake... Part way through the evening the guard captains show up to thank parents for their support (we hand out something for them to wave or shake in the stands and each guard member writes a thank you note to their parents)...We have time for questions & answers with the coach (and band director) and the rest of the evening is spent talking about "the kids"."
I love this idea for so many reasons...  Smile

FUN for FRIDAY! #1: Exam Treats Print E-mail

Well - a NEW category!  Movement Monday is going so well that I thought it just might be nice to have a new weekly post to look forward to.  So, inspired by Cheryl, I started to think of another important thing coaches need to think about on a weekly basis... and of course the title had to have alliteration...

So it's FUN for FRIDAY!

SO much of our job as coaches is about making this performance experience FUN.  But, too often, the stresses that come along with competition, the fear of letting people down, the time crunches, the fight for rehearsal space, the teenage drama... all of it... can leave us FORGETTING about the FUN... and soon it can become all work.

Thankfully, we have competition days which usually bring back those wonderful feelings of why all that work is worth it.

But I thought it would be nice to seek out fun ideas to share with our community.  As coaches, we should PLAN fun into our lessons to make even the work seem easier ("A Spoonful of Sugar"...as Mary Poppins would say!) rather than just taking for granted that the fun will come.  We can seek out ways to make sure our students know that we care about THEM more than the score.  We can PLAN FUN to ease the tension that can grow during those tedious weeks of cleaning or rewrites.

So for this week my fun idea is...
