Here at the holidays many of us take time to think of ways we can "give back." I know that in my house I'm working hard to teach my 5-year-old twin daughters that the holidays should be more about giving than getting! Those of you who have been long-time readers probably know that I strongly encourage coaches to find ways to provide service opportunities for their students - especially opportunities that allow the student to use their special talents and our art form to benefit the local community. This is the passion that led to my own team's 2006 winterguard show inspired by the Race for the Cure and a season of service with my students as well as the formation of our Colorguard Spin for the Cure team which benefits the Komen Global Race for the Cure. I was thrilled when Halftime Magazine publisher Christine Ngeo Katzman contacted me to say they were doing an article on marching organizations that participate in philanthropy. I am even more excited now that the article has been published in the November/December issue because it highlights not only our race team but a variety of projects done by marching organizations throughout the country who are making a difference. The featured projects include a halftime benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims, fundraising to battle ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease), free music instruction for younger students and yes, our race team! I hope you might take a moment to read the article and that it might inspire you to consider adding this rewarding type of educational experience to your game plan! It's easier than you think and the rewards are well worth the effort! Click Here to read "Bands Give Back" by Elizabeth Geli, Halftime Magazine November/December 2009. Does your marching organization participate in community service? If so, please take a moment and let us know! Leave a comment below that describes how your group is "giving back" and inspire others through your example! |
