FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Winterguard Wand and Championships Print E-mail

This past weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to meet a good friend for the very first time.  What was that?  How can the phrases good friend and meeting for the first time go together?  Well...this website has connected me "virtually" with other color guard educators throughout the world.  About a year or so into posting my own experiences on the site a friend of mine who moved to California and who has been a long-time CGE supporter, Ed Martinez, wrote me an email suggesting that I should get in touch with a judge he met on the West Coast who he felt shared my coaching beliefs and the desire to facilitate the sharing of information between instructors.  So that's how Chris Casteel, the WGASC education coordinator and I first "met."

Over the past 2 years Chris has become an integral part of our small group of writers contributing articles regularly.  She's also become someone I consider a friend.  Her positive energy is infectious and her commitment to instructor education in her own circuit is energizing.  So when she told me she was visiting Washington D.C. I was excited to finally meet in person. I brought my husband and kids along... but Chris and I ended up sitting and talking color guard for three hours while he and the kids went off exploring.  It was great fun!

For today's "From the Archives" article I found one of the first articles Chris submitted to CGE: "The Winterguard Wand and Championships" .  She discusses determining your team's goals for the championships competition including using the experience both as instructor education and a celebration of the season.  I hope it helps spur some ideas as you head into your championships competitions in the next few weeks.
